On September 10, 2018, the act was struck down by Superior Court Justice Edward Belobaba as unconstitutional, ruling that the bigger wards infringed voters' rights to an election whose consequence presents "powerful illustration", and that unilaterally modifying electoral boundaries in the middle of a campaign infringed on candidates' freedom of expression. In August 2018, the federal government of Ontario handed the Better Local Government Act, which, among other factors, purchased the Toronto City Council to improve its electoral ward boundaries for the 2018 municipal election to match the boundaries applied for federal and provincial electoral ridings, so lowering the selection of wards from 47 to twenty five. Premier of Ontario Doug Ford stated that the council had "unsuccessful to act on the critical troubles struggling with the town", and claimed price savings of $25 million about the upcoming four decades. The court concluded that the way in which the service elicited necessary information from users relating to their roommate preferences (by owning dropdowns specifying gender, existence of kids, and sexual orientation), and the method in which it utilized that information in creating roommate matches (by reducing profiles that did not match user technical specs), that the service was an "facts information supplier" and as a result liable for the discrimination statements.
