They are giant, and exhibit a favourable improvement of the coronal area and intellect, mixed with massive organs of the propensities. In brief, within the Negro brain the ethical and reflecting organs are of bigger dimension, in proportion to the organs of the animal propensities now enumerated, than in that of the Indian. 1 In the Philosophical Transactions for 1836, part ii., Professor Tiedemann of Heidelberg has attempted to show, by measurements, that the Negro mind is equal in dimension, and related in construction, to that of the European. Dr A. Combe has shewn that Tiedemann's information, at the same time as reported by himself, lead to an opposite conclusion in regard to the relative sizes of the mind in the two races. Their brains are inferior in dimension even to these of the North American Indian, and their degradation has been extra abject. The North American Indian has escaped the degradation of slavery, as a result of he's a wild, vindictive, cunning, untameable savage, too harmful to be trusted by the white men in social intercourse with themselves, and, moreover, too obtuse and intractable to be worth coercing into servitude.
